Synthetic Biology

While genetic engineering aims to modify the genetic code in living organisms, synthetic biology seeks to create new forms of life that are programmed for a specific purpose. Synthetic cells can be instructed by ‘artificial’ DNA to produce a pharmaceutical drug or turn CO2 into energy. While this vision has not yet been realized, advances are being made. Synthetic biology, it is said, will help to create the chemical factories of the future.
